Final articles to Aaron by Sunday, March 29
We encourage you to write on any campus, national, or international issue, but we do have five topics in which we are particularly interested:
1) What should we make of the fact that Obama won 18-29 year olds by a 2-to-1 margin and even won Alabama 18-29 yr. olds? How long lasting is this phenomenon? How much is it a reaction to personality factors (the incompetence and divisiveness of the Bush Administration and the desire for consensus among Obama), and how much is it a reflection of an ideological preference? Are there seeds of a permanent Democratic majority, a permanently hobbled Right wing of the Republican Party, or nothing of the sort? (Can look at how Baby Boomers still vote.) What does this election mean for the power of the “youth vote,” and is it the case that those under 30 have gone from being the least to most powerful force in elections? Thinking concretely, considering that those under-30 supported gay marriage in CA 2-to-1, can be at least expect social policy change?
2) What, if anything, is the impact of the move of the Carl A. Fields Center to the Street?
3) The effect of the Obama Presidency on attitudes in the black community – There have been studies showing that black students with high grades have fewer friends, which is the opposite of the case with white children. Similarly, abortion rates for unmarried black women have been increasing even while they have been declining nationwide. Is the example of a Columbia and Harvard-educated black president with a stable family sufficient, or are there ways for Barack and Michelle to use their bully pulpit to their advantage? (the assumptions behind this question may be wrong, but the goal of an article would be to explore whether they are or not and how they affect society)
4) Do we know who buildings on campus were named after, and how ridiculously conservative many of them were? Does this have any implications for the political atmosphere of the school? Has the pattern of who donates to the university changed over time?
5) How have economic downturns affected the attitude towards immigrants in the US throughout history? Has it affect the public sentiment towards immigration recently? Will it affect immigration policy?
